PRESS CLUB COME BACK SOON! CLOSING JULY 20…
Have you heard about this new showcase at Press Club? It’s pretty sweet! The host seems slightly unsure and he can’t memorize his material, but the comics are first-rate entertainment.
HA-HA! I’m that host! And I’m not terrible, but I’ve got a long way to go. That’s why I keep my set short and get to the real comedians ASAP.
My formula for the show is to book top Portland comedians. If I hear of a comedian coming through town during the date of the show, I try to book him/her, but it’s mostly Portland talent. Finally, I like to book a wildcard comic, someone very early in their career, who hasn’t quite become a routinely booked showcase comic, but someone whose comedy I have affection for.
So far there have been three shows on the last Fridays of the month. The first show featured my dream lineup; my favorite comics in Portland. And they all said yes! It happened on March 29 and it was a fantastic debut. Tim Hammer, Bri Pruett, Amy Miller, Curtis Cook, Todd Armstrong and Kristine Levine. I don’t remember much from the night since I was so nervous, but I did hear laughter.
The second show happened on May 31 and I brought back several of the same comics from the first show. Nathan Brannon was slated to headline, but he got a last-minute opportunity to host Damon Wayans at Helium, so he’ll come back for the August show. Tim Hammer graciously filled in and performed along with Jake Silberman, Bri Pruett, Curtis Cook and Alex Falcone.
The most recent show on June 27 featured Anthony Lopez, Veronica Heath (birthday girl!), Jason Traeger, Sean Jordan and Ash Casteman, with Whitney Streed headlining. The place was packed and I couldn’t have been prouder of the performances. The kicker for me was when I said I was done with my set and someone said “awww” like she wanted me to keep going. It was an out of body experience to say the least and someone might just have shown her a cat picture right at the moment, but it meant something to me in any case.
The July show will be another blockbuster, with local favorites Andy McDonald, JoAnn Schinderle, Nariko Ott, Randy Mendez and headlined by Amy Miller.
In August, Nathan Brannon will be headlining and supported by Elvis Mujic, (a comic out of the Bay area I met at Kelly’s Olympian, a great open mic hosted by Shannon Hunt on Sundays at 4pm), Adam Pasi, Brandy Feit and Lucia Fusano.
To add to the fun, there is also a raffle with some pretty cool prizes, including, but not limited to, a signed poster and a $5 credit at Press Club.
Hope to see you at the shows!
