The premise should terrify any newer open mic comic, and yes, that would be me. A guest host joins you on the stage, gives you a minute (or less) to perform and then begins to heckle, or banter with, you. I was about to describe some of the comedy that occurred, but out of context, it would sound…patently offensive. Which is why I recommend it so highly!
Conceived by Aaron Klopfer and Venu Mattrau, it is a fresh take on a venerable tradition in Portland: open mic comedy.
Xander Deveaux was guest host on Tuesday, July 29, and he was masterful as he was in turn kind to the less skilled (yeah, I’m looking at me) and then eviscerated the more experienced comics. The repartee he had with Kyle Harbert was joyfully horrifying to watch, with Kyle burning the light to a cinder. It’s the only time that I’ve seen someone burn the light where I thought, “don’t go, I want to see more of this.” I won’t say who won the debate, but it was an even match in physique, temperament, and wit.
If you are a comic or a fan of comedy and want to see a more free-wheeling style of comedy, I highly recommend that you make time for this show. It’s what we in the comedy world call fun. It will keep you up a bit late, but what are you, my age?!
Next Tuesday, the designated heckler will be “drunken oracle” Tim Ledwith. If you’ve seen Tim in his element, you’ll want to be there. If you haven’t, you’ll need to be there. He’s a manic ball of energy with a unique style and perspective. Sign ups are at 10 pm, show starts at 11:00. Boogie’s Burgers & Brew is located at 910 E Burnside Street.
